The wait is over. GTA 5 is finally here. Was it worth the wait? Well, based on my first 15, which turned into about the first 2 hours… Oh yes!
As I’m sure everyone knows, the game takes place back in Los Santos. An absolutely massive Los Santos. The map is huge. In the time I have spent playing, I have hardly cleared the map. Just the downtown area for the most part. In GTA 5 the map is totally unlocked from the beginning. There is however a “fog of war” effect until you travel to all areas of the map for it to completely clear off.
This time around there are 3 main characters. Franklin, Trevor, and Michael. In the first moments of the game you are introduced to each character and the games newly refined mechanics. It does a great job of getting you into the action fast, and captures your attention right away. That is all I will say about the story, cause well, this is a spoiler free zone!
On to the gameplay itself. Rockstar has refined just about everything that was in GTA 4; The movement of the characters, the driving, and most importantly, the shooting. Personally I didn’t have much against the shooting in GTA 4, but I can see a huge difference in the way GTA 5 does its shooting. They learned a lot in their games since GTA 4, Red Dead, Max Payne 3, All huge learning experiences, and it shows. Mechanics from each of these games finds itself in GTA 5 to make it an all around blast to play.
Just in the short time I have spent in the game, many random things have happened. I was chasing a guy who stole a bike, I was in a car chasing him down; when I hit him he fell off the bike right into an oncoming car, which ended up killing the guy! It’s moments like this that make just a drive from point A to B so awesome cause you never know what might happen.
Even sitting here writing this, with GTA in the background taunting me, I just can’t wait to get back to is massive open world and steal an airplane so I can get a look at this beautiful creation Rockstar has managed to create. All of this on a current gen platform? I can’t wait to see what they do in the new generation.
